University of Essex Rock Society

About

What is RockSoc?

RockSoc is a society for people who like rock music at the University of Essex. Anyone's welcome, whatever their particular tastes in rock.

How do I join?

The easiest way to join RockSoc is to visit our stall at Freshers' Fair at the first weekend of the year. You can find out where we are from the maps which will be displayed around campus.

After Freshers Fair, you can join any time from the Student Union reception desk, which is in the SU corridor accessible from the doors from square 3 to Level 2 and The Underground.

What will I get from my membership?

RockSoc is a varied society, with members who like to socialise, members who just use us as an information source for going out with others and members who just like to take part in discussion on our website. RockSoc does a variety of different things, including quiet nights at the bar, loud club-type nights in venues on campus, mass outings to gigs both locally and further afield and pub crawls in nearby village Wivenhoe.

We also maintain a directory of venues and upcoming events so that our website can be a one-stop source of everything rock-related in and around the university and Colchester.

Finally, at the end of the year any remaining money is spent on a large, loud barbeque out by the lakes on campus, so if you don't feel like you've got your money's worth you can come and fill up your stomach for free!

In sort, RockSoc provides something for almost everyone, and its membership fee won't break the bank! ;)

Who runs RockSoc?

As with most societies, RockSoc has three elected executive officers who ultimately oversee the running of the society and organise its events. The exec for academic year 2005/2006 consists of Peter Mead, Simon Wade and Martin Atkins.

However, the society has, since its inception, had an enthusiastic and willing subset of members forming the RockSoc committee, and without them most things RockSoc does would be, if not impossible, at least quite a bit more difficult! Anyone can be on the committee if they want, and it's a good first step to perhaps becoming a future elected exec officer. You don't have to do anything special to be on the committee: just look out for things you might be able to help with and offer your services! :)
